I think you meant, "still there." Because, really, the deer is not *here*, he's *there*, in the road. In fact, we don't really want him to be there either. Let's hope he (or she) is home with a nice deer family enjoying a plate of shrubbery stew. Still, the poem has a nice flow to it.

I think it is fine. It has a great little story to tell. The only thing that I find to be confusing is using the word "here" in the last line, since you went away.
